Work Permit
Work Permits in Canada
Most people need a work permit to work in Canada. If you require one, you may be eligible for either an employer-specific work permit or an open work permit.
Types of Work Permits
1. Employer-Specific Work Permit
An employer-specific work permit allows you to work under certain conditions, including:
- The name of the specific employer you can work for
- How long you can work
- The location where you can work (if applicable)
Requirements Before Applying
Your employer must provide:
- A copy of your employment contract
- One of the following:
- A copy of a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
- An offer of employment number (for LMIA-exempt workers)
To obtain this number, the employer must use the Employer Portal.
If the Employer Does Not Use the Employer Portal
In this case, the employer must give you a copy of the employment contract.
2. Open Work Permit
An open work permit lets you work for any employer in Canada, except for:
- Employers listed as ineligible due to non-compliance with conditions
- Employers offering striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages
Eligibility for Open Work Permits
Open work permits are only available under specific circumstances.
Medical Exam Requirement
Some jobs may require a medical exam. If you don’t want medical restrictions on your work permit, you must complete a medical exam with a panel physician.
Your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children may be eligible to:
- Work
- Study
- Live with you in Canada while you work
